Welcome to Manchester School's Art Room!
Fourth and fifth graders have art once a week for 45 minutes. The curriculum is sequentially designed so the students experience a variety of art mediums and concepts. The skills, concepts, and themes build over the two years and none of the projects are repeated. The curriculum is designed to meet the Maine State Learning Standards for the grade levels. We study art appreciation, and art criticism, we explore different cultures and their art and expand our creative expression. My philosophy behind teaching is to teach all students equally. My job is to bring out every student's creative potential. My lessons relate to the real world. Students see how creativity can fit in any career in their future and how art can enhance their lives.
The projects are design to promote creative thinking and problem solving. I encourage students to think for themselves, make their own choices, and come up with new ideas. Many projects relate directly to their classroom curriculum. For example, we do a unit in 4th grade on creative inventions that relates directly to their studies of simple machines. The art room environment is a positive one where students feel comfortable to create and expand their creative potential. We have a lot of fun; but at the same time students learn and build on their skills. When students leave Manchester School, I encourage all students to hold on to their important creativity no matter what career they pursue in the future. Creativity can only enhance their lives. The final goal is to produce life long creators!
