WELCOME to the 2009-2010 School year!

The REAL School at Mackworth Island is proud to announce that we have received a new SERVICE LEARNING grant from the prestigious Milken Education Foundation!  The Milken Foundation's FESTIVAL FOR YOUTH project will support leadership activities, an expansion to our ropes course, and the facilitation of adventure-based, team-building events (led by our students) for other schools, programs, and non-profit organizations!

The REAL School is an adventure-based Alternative school serving students in grades 7-12.  We enroll students from districts all over Southern Maine.  Referrals must be made by schools, districts, or government agencies.  (Referral materials available on this web-site).  Door-to-door transportation by school van is available to students.

We offer integrated curriculum, based on the Maine Learning Results Standards, Performance Indicators, and Guiding Principles.  Our students may qualify for Credit Recovery, Work Cooperative Program, and/or Individualized Programming.

In accordance with Maine's Chapter 127, we provide a Personal Learning Plan for each student upon entry.  The PLP team - which includes the student, parents, teachers, administrator, school counselor, and other advocates from various outside agencies - determines goals, objectives and strategies for ensuring individual student success.  Included in each student's PLP is a Positive Behavior Support Plan, based on Functional Behavior Assessments that are conducted after 30 days of enrollment.

Elements of Day Treatment programming, Therapeutic Adventure activities, flexible scheduling, and small-group settings are among the approaches utilized at the REAL School.  We use authentic learning and authentic assessment to infuse learning with inherent relevance.
