In math class this year we are studying Algebra, and will continue working on problem-solving skills using a wide variety of strategies. Students will be creating their own "ABC's of Algebra" books in which they will build their language skills in the area of mathematics to promote deeper understanding of concepts and methods. Our class list of terms and ABC book criteria can be found at https://sites.google.com/site/algebraabcs/.
As we make the transition to a standards-based grading system, I am creating a web page to keep track of math standards for two purposes: to focus my instruction on the standards that I will be assessing, and to communicate with students about which standards they are working toward when they participate in various class activities. This website is in progress, and will be updated throughout the school year. It can be found at https://sites.google.com/site/grade8algebra1standards/.
This year students will be involved in at least one self-selected math trimester project. Each student will be encouraged to choose a project that will allow him or her to explore an area of mathematics that is of personal interest, connected to the real world, and connected to a standard toward which they are working on proficiency. See https://sites.google.com/site/mathtrimesterproject/project-ideas---december-2010 for more information
New this year, we will be using IXL. Initially we will review some of the 8th grade skills that are available through this program while becoming familiar with how the system works. When Algebra and Geometry become available, students will have more avenues to explore and opportunities to excel. Parent letters with students' user names and passwords were sent home with students on September 15th.
Students will also have opportunities to continue working with modular origami if they choose to challenge themselves in this manner. See pictures of last year's origami day below!
